Political Science Professor and Defense Researchers James B. Bruce
A retired senior executive officer with the Central Intelligence Agency, James B. Bruce has served as an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University’s Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning since 2015. His classes emphasize various intelligence and national security subjects. He has taught at numerous institutions, including Georgetown University, Columbia University, American University, Marshall University, the National War College, and his alma mater, Kent State University.
In addition to lecturing to auditorium-sized audiences and managing small seminar discussion groups, James Bruce is an adjunct international and defense researcher with the RAND Corporation in Arlington, Virginia, where he was a senior political scientist from 2006 to 2018.
His work involves researching select topics for the Department of Defense and intelligence community clients. Dr. Bruce’s professional memberships include the Association of Former Intelligence Officers, where he served on its board of directors from 2014 to 2022.
During his time as a political science student at Kent State University, James Bruce served as an elected student senate member and vice president of the student body. He received the Manchester Cup for leadership and was a member of both the Pi Sigma Alpha and Omicron Delta Kappa societies for political science and leadership, respectively. After receiving his Master of Arts in political science, he continued his education at the University of Denver. He passed his oral comprehensive exams with distinction and graduated with a Ph.D. in international relations.
